The Past, Present, or Future.
In the documentary “Missrepresentation” the narrator continually talked about wanting to ensure a better future for her daughter. I think that it is important that we continue to better the world for future generations, but just focusing on future generations and making change for someone else often causes us to ignore change and things we can do right now. I feel as if this documentary did not completely cover the successes of women in the media and in general—I recognize and agree with the harms that media causes and what was presented in the documentary and think that part was accurate, but they only focused on the negatives and didn’t report on the more increasing success that women are having. Having a sole focus on change for the future and not fully recognizing success is harmful to spurring positive, progressive change. As they talked about in the documentary, girls need stronger female role models to look up to. They interviewed many strong successful women in the documentary and im sure that there are many more, but they only focused mainly on the problems and challenges that they’ve faced, where they could’ve focused on the positive accomplishments they’ve had to show how it is possible and not completely an uphill climb and only struggle once you get there. They could’ve used this documentary to both show the misrepresentation of women, but also the amazing success and possibility. By focusing on success and the possibility for it right now, not in the future or for her daughter, it can and will encourage girls now, not make them hope for a future where things are better. The documentary pointed out the misrepresentation of women and called for change but did not use the film as an outlet for positivity and representation that can promote change right now, for now. They focused on the negatives in the past, and the possibility for the future, but not what is and can be in the present.
